I have a pretty good story about King Curtis.
I was 17 and went to a club on Bleecker Street called "The Village Gate" to see an early performance by Paul Butterfield Blues Band, at the time they were just a 4 piece band. Elvin Bishop on guitar, Paul on harmonica and singing, and Sam Lay on drums, Jerome Arnold on electric bass.
They opened for Gloria Lynn, whose big hit was on the air at that time. On WRVR the local FM jazz station; the tune was Teach Me Tonight. Her backup band included King Curtis and Kenny Burrell. It was also a 4 piece group.
So much fun! I never realized that Curtis was a straight ahead player. All I heard was his pop hits (Soul Sernande), what an incredible Eve!!
